My Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
I’m humbled by the courageous way the people of St. Nicholas have repeatedly stepped out in faith, selflessly giving for the glory of God and out of concern for others, loving as we are loved.
Serving as St. Nicholas' priest and minister in the broader community is immensely fulfilling. This vocation is not immune to occasional periods of struggle, however. In October of 2024, for example, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. By all accounts the January 2025 surgery to remove part of my colon was a success and I am coming to terms with a new normal that, at times, is a wee bit inconvenient and unpleasant.
With that experience, I have come to the difficult conclusion that, after nearly 14 years, I am no longer able to serve with the same “give-my-all” energy. For this reason, I have informed Vestry last that I will retire with a final celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday, August 31st.
While change can be unsettling, we know that God is at work in our midst. We have seen the miraculous too many times to doubt, so our faith is strong. St. Nicholas will continue to put trust in God into action. Empowered by the Spirit of Almighty God, the priesthood of all believers in Christ's Church at St. Nicholas will continue the good work.
We're told in Holy Scripture that God is love and we understand Jesus Christ to be love-embodied-for-us. So, no matter where one is in one's spiritual journey, you will experience love and acceptance at St. Nicholas; for we are created out of love, in love, and for love.
Come, See, and Share Our Peace.
In Christ,
Mark Andrew+
