I recently attended a committee meeting at John Knox Village and was seated next to a woman patiently attaching the binding to a handmade quilt.  Being a new quilter, I was interested in her work.  Following the meeting I had a conversation with Sara Crew, resident coordinator and founding memberof the Boca Raton based Quilt Guild by the Sea. She is spearheading an ambitious program to award one of these quilts to every one of the 160+ veterans in residence at John Knox. She was planning a presentation ceremony for the first 10 veterans on June 9.  Each Quilts of Valor ceremony is organized by Quilts of Valor in conjunction with the Boca Raton based Quilts Guild by the Sea. My husband Bill was to be one of the first recipients here.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation originated in 2003 by founder Catherine Roberts whoseson was deployed to Iraq and returned feeling deeply despaired and emotionally depressed.  Feeling the pull of the age- old custom of the comforting and caring feeling of a quilt she made one for her son and noticed a change in his demeanor.  She began to present quilts to others and thus the dream became a reality. Since that timeover 400 thousand quilts have been presented to veterans around the country.
Each quilt is hand-made requiring quality workmanship with approved patterns with a specific size not to exceed 60X65 inches. Most are made in Patriotic red, white and blue colors. It is rare for each quilt to be made and finished by a single creator.  They will all go through many hands.  Some will cut the pieces, some will assemble, others will trim and square it before it is sent with its backing to a special long-arm quilting machine for quilting. After quilting it will be returned to another to hand apply the binding to the edges. Every quilt is differentand each is registered with the foundation.  The labor intensive making of each quilt is estimated to be 60 to 100 hours.
Any living veteran has been “touched by war” and any who have been honorably or generally discharged is eligible. None can be awarded posthumously.  Action in a warzone is not a requirement nor is rank, branch or length of service. Quilts can be presented in a ceremony such as the one at JKV or individually.  They can be presented on any day except Memorial Day which, out of respect, is reserved strictly as a remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. They are never to be considered awards but as gifts.
The ceremony is solemn and highly emotional. The quilt is folded back side up with a personalized label sewn in the corner showing the veteran’s name and a short personal message. Individuals are called and a “wrapper” and helper walk to stand in front.  He will read his label and the quilt will be unfolded facing him. After he views it, it is turned around, shown to the audience and folded in half.  It is then wrapped around the shoulders with a quietly spoken message: “It is an honor to present this quilt as a thank you for your service and sacrifice to your nation”.
Another ceremony is planned in November in conjunction with the Veternan’s day celebrations here at JKV when Sara hopes to present 20 to 25 more.
