And another new week begins!

March 30, 2026

On this day in history, 1533, Thomas Cranmer becomes Archbishop of Canterbury.

Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556) was a key leader of the English Reformation and the first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury, appointed in 1533. He was instrumental in enabling Henry VIII's annulment from Catherine of Aragon, guiding the Church of England’s break from Rome, and drafting the Book of Common Prayer, establishing Anglican theological foundations.

Key Aspects of Thomas Cranmer:

  • Role in Reformation: As archbishop, he spearheaded religious reform in England, moving the church toward Protestantism during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI.
  • Key Accomplishments: Authored the Book of Common Prayer (1549, 1552) and the Forty-two Articles of Religion. He also championed the use of the English Bible in churches.
  • The King's Great Matter: He rose to prominence by suggesting that Henry VIII consult European universities regarding the annulment of his marriage, rather than relying solely on the Pope.
  • Final Years and Martyrdom: Upon the accession of the Catholic Queen Mary I, Cranmer was imprisoned for treason and heresy. Despite initially recanting his beliefs under pressure, he ultimately revoked his recantation and was burned at the stake in Oxford on March 21, 1556.
  • Legacy: He is remembered as a founder of Anglican theology and a significant Protestant martyr.

If you have been making automatic donations with FaithStreet on a weekly or monthly basis, you will need to set that up with ChurchTrac.  And be sure to login to FaithStreet to discontinue your online giving with that platform.  Every new practice comes with a learning curve and it will take a little time to become accustomed to this new format.  However, all will be well because
